Ten Things I Learned From 2020

Reflecting on 2020 in January felt a little “too soon”, but now that the first month of 2021 is in the bag, I’m ready to look back.

1) “Orange Man Bad!!! Orange Man Bad!!! Orange Man Bad!!!” (also known as “enemy-centered reality” and insanity).

“Orange Man Bad!”

2) Life is too short to keep pretending that we know what we are doing.

3) It is madness to calibrate one’s heart to the failed and failing promises of political ideology political parties, and politicians).

4) If you are a follower-student of Jesus Christ, please stay the hell out of this broken, bitterly divisive, and utterly deceitful discourse of partisan politics and stop “rendering to Caesar what belongs to God” (i.e. your hopes and fears).

Caesar’s Coin

5) “Pain is God’s megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” C.S. Lewis

6) We all want to be important and virtuous, but the truth is, “no one is righteous, no, not one.”

7) Death is coming for all of us . . . no really, you’re gonna die (our family attended two funerals in 2020 and we lost another friend last month).

8) “Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.”

9) The world is a mess. Thank God for my family, our company and a few friends that “stick closer than brothers.”

10) I am learning the difference between the faith sustaining hope of the gospel, and the emptiness of mere ideology (i.e., an endless series of religious rules and political laws; the demands of self-assured, self-serving and self-righteous mortals). One is an attempted “fix-up” job on the old world. The other is the promise of new creation, and new management!

Ok, now with that out of the way. Let’s keep rolling and Don’t Look Back!
